BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Christian Reimers hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give UAB a 4-3 win over Samford in nonconference baseball action at Jerry Young Memorial Field.
Reimers victimized Bulldog reliever Matt Fields (1-3) for his second HR of the season, sending it over the right field wall as UAB (25-26) won its second game against the Bulldogs in a week. Samford (19-32) fell to 1-2 in extra innings this season, while the Blazers picked up their first extra inning win in six attempts. Samford (19-32) trailed 3-0 through six innings, but scored two runs on a Robert Evans single in the seventh and Eric Hollis drove in Michael Collins in the eighth to knotch the game, 3-3..
UAB struck first in an early pitchers' duel, as Brandon Isbell hit a solo home run on Samford starter Dennis Thomas in the fourth. A double by Matt Gaulden in the sixth scored Chris George and Mark Garner for the 3-0 lead, and Bulldog reliever Robert Evans held the Blazers to only two hits through the 10th.
Phillip Holmes was the only Bulldog with a multiple hit game, going 3-for-5 and scoring a run in the seventh to lead Samford. Along with Reimers' 3-for-6 effort, Chris George was 4-for-4 for the Blazers. Blake Allen (4-5) picked up the win for UAB.
Samford returns to action this weekend, hosting Troy State in a three-game series that will determine the sixth seed in the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament, May 16-19.
