DeLAND, Fla. - Sophomore forward Lisa Robishaw scored two goals while freshmen Kathy Nichols, Lindsay Shanks and sophomore Hayley Kolb each added goals as Samford defeated Stetson, 5-1 Thursday afternoon in an Atlantic Sun conference game. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the conference while the Hatters dropped to 1-4.

"We're winning the games we need to win and those are conference games," Samford head coach Barry Spitzer said. "We've tied Stetson and lost to Stetson. It was nice to get a win against them."

Last year, the Bulldogs and Hatters played to a scoreless tie in overtime. That tie had a lot to do in keeping Samford out of the conference tournament. This time around, it was a different story.

The Hatters struck first in the 15th minute of play. After senior goalkeeper Carrie Ollom deflected a shot for a save, Stetson's Emma Astrom took the deflection and passed it to Dana Metzgar, who kicked it in to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the 21st minute. Sophomore forward Hayley Kolb lined up for the corner kick. Kolb's kick curved over the hands of the Stetson goalie and into the net to knot the game.

Robishaw's first goal came just 1:28 after Kolb's goal. Off a pass from Christa Jones, Robishaw, on the breakaway, beat the oncharging goalie with a shot, putting the Bulldogs ahead 2-1. Samford would add another goal right before halftime in the 39th minute. After sophomore midfielder Jill Hudgens was fouled along the sideline, freshman midfielder Kathy Nichols nailed the free kick from 40 yards out into the left corner of the goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead at the half.

Robishaw broke free for her second goal in the 51st minute. Freshman Heather Pomper crossed a ball from the right side to the middle and Robishaw outran two defenders and kicked passed the Stetson goalie for a 4-1 lead.

"Everything the coaches said about the runs worked really well today. I had some good runs. I was faster than them today," Robishaw said. "On the first goal, Christa put a great ball in. I just kept my composure. I looked up and knocked the ball in."

The Bulldogs last goal of the game came when Kolb's cross from the left side found Shanks, who tapped it past the goalie into the right corner of the goal to make for the final score.

"I'm very proud of Lisa. She's probably not as noticed as Lindsay (Shanks) or Hayley (Kolb) and she's taken advantage of that. Now she's going to be noticed. She's a player that has worked very hard to get where she is. Now that's going to give us three very good players across the front, which will make us a stronger team," Spitzer said.

Shanks's goal was her sixth of the season while Kolb picked up her fifth goal of the season. Nichols' goal was the first of her career.

"I was shocked. I didn't think it was going in. I looked up and saw the keeper at the front 6, and I saw she was out of position so I went for the back 6 with it, and it went in," Nichols said.

Samford outshot Stetson 26-14. Senior goalie Carrie Ollom finished with three saves.

The Bulldogs continue their Florida and conference road trip when they travel to Jacksonville Saturday. Kickoff is 2 p.m. (EST).
