BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Vickie Nichols resigned as head volleyball coach at Samford University on Wednesday, to spend more time with her husband and four children.
Nichols had a 40-57 record in three seasons at Samford. She led the Bulldogs to the Atlantic Sun tournament in two of her three years and orchestrated the school's first ever wins over SEC opponents with victories against Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs also beat UAB for the first time ever under Nichols.
"It is hard to leave Samford," said Nichols. "This is the toughest decision I have ever had to make, but I am excited about the opportunity to spend more time with my family. I am thankful to Samford for the opportunity to coach this team and I have enjoyed my time here."
Nichols will remain in the Birmingham area and may look to continue coaching at the club level where two of her daughters play.
Samford assistant coach Kris Dorn will take over the day to day operations of the volleyball program until a new head coach can be found.
