Jacksonville State shot 51 percent from the floor, 53 percent from three point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line to hand Samford its 15th-straight loss 69-52 in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks (4-14, 3-8 A-Sun) hit their first four three point attempts and finished the game 9-17 from behind the arc. Shanika Freeman led JSU with 23 points, 18 in the second half. Kelly Nye had 14 points hitting 4-8 from long range and Heather Shepard scored a career high 13 points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range.
Samford (1-16, 0-10 A-Sun) was led by 14 points from Morgan Vickery who has been in double figures in five of her last seven games. Noot Pittman scored a season-high 12 points and Che' Walker had a season-high six points for the Bulldogs.
Samford was impressive in the first half only committing six turnovers and dominating the offensive boards. The Bulldogs held a 20-14 rebounding edge and a 12-2 edge on the offensive glass. Samford held an 11-2 lead in second chance points and went into the locker room tied at 28.
Shepard's three-point shooting kept the Gamecocks close in the first half. She scored nine of JSU's first 11 points of the game. In the second half, JSU forced 16 Samford turnovers and held an 18-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
With the game tied at 33 at the 16:14 mark, Jacksonville State went on an 11-2 run to push the score to 44-35 with 11:43 to play. Jax State would go on an 11-3 run at the six minute mark to push its lead to put the game out of reach.
Turnovers and poor free throw shooting plagued the Bulldogs in the second half. Samford finished the game 6-14 (43 percent) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot better from three point range (6-13, 46 percent) than from the line.
Samford will return to the court on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs travel to Troy State for a 2 p.m. tip off.
