DELAND, Fla. - Phillip Ramelli scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead five players in double figures and Samford shot over 60 percent from the field and the three-point line as the Bulldogs defeated Stetson 89-67 at the Edmunds Center on Saturday.
Samford (8-6, 5-1 A-Sun) ended its three-game losing streak in grand fashion, shooting 69 percent from the field, 61.9 percent from the three-point line and 81.8 percent from the free throw line in the key conference victory. Samford's effort was its best combined shooting performance in five seasons under Jimmy Tillette, and was the largest margin of victory for the Bulldogs since the 86-53 win over Florida Atlantic on Feb. 17, 2001.
The Bulldogs also outrebounded Stetson 32-24 and recorded 22 assists on 29 total made field goals.
Chris Weaver made a layup with 4:48 remaining in the game to give Samford its largest lead of the game, 78-48. The Hatters never got to within 19 points for the remainder of the game.
After shooting 68 percent from the field in the first half, the Bulldogs' shooting eye sharpened in the second, as Samford made 70 percent of its field goal attempts and shot five of eight (.714) from the beyond the arc. The Bulldogs held Stetson (4-7, 1-4 A-Sun) to 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three-point line. Samford also outrebounded the Hatters 32-24.
Weaver scored 15 points, Eddie Harper added 14, Jon Mills tied his career high with 14 and Corey Green added 12 for the Bulldogs. Alexis McMillan and Joe McNeal each scored 11 to lead Stetson.
Weaver also knocked down a three pointer with 1:15 remaining in the first half to give Samford its largest spread of the first period, 46-24, and the Bulldogs took a 26-26 lead into halftime.
Ramelli also led the Bulldogs in the first half, scoring 10 points on four of five shooting. Eight of the 10 Bulldogs that played scored in the game, as the Bulldogs shot a blistering 68 percent from the field (17-25) and 57 percent (8-14) from the three point line in the first half.
