NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Bridgit Martin scored two goals Friday night and Marian Wagner notched her seventh tally of the season as Samford defeated Belmont 3-0 in Atlantic Sun soccer action at the Whitten Soccer Complex.
Martin and Wagner scored Samford's first two goals 34 seconds apart in the 71st minute. Martin got the Bulldogs on the board first as she one-timed a cross from Allison Provine past Belmont goal keeper Ali Young. Off the ensuing kick off, Provine sent a ball down the left flank that Martin ran onto and chipped towards goal. Wagner beat Young to the ball with her right foot and found the back of the net to make the score 2-0. Provine was credited with an assist on both goals to give her three on the season. Martin's assist was her second.
Martin scored her second goal of the night and her fourth of the season in the 86th minute. She received a pass from Lindsay Shanks beating Belmont's offside trap and beat Young with a right-footed shot. Martin now has three game winning goals on the season and Shanks has a team-high five assists.
"I thought Bridgit and Chelsey McEntire gave us a great spark off the bench," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "Sometimes your starters are going to have an off night and one of the strengths of this team is that we have quality players coming in off the bench."
Samford outshot the Bruins 22-6 in the match to improve to 12-2-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in Atlantic Sun play. Belmont drops to 0-12 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The Bulldogs had a number of scoring chances in the first 45 minutes. Shanks hit the near post in the seventh minute and Provine had a shot in the 31st minute that hit the side netting. Wagner had a shot that was pushed wide of goal by Young in the 38th minute. On the ensuing corner kick, Christina Dortch had a shot from inside the box that was again saved by Young.
Belmont's best scoring chance of the match came just before Samford scored its first goal in the 70th minute. Brooke Goodman got behind the defense but her shot was saved by Crystal Royall. Royall had three saves in the match as she and Sherry Nuckolls combined for the Bulldogs' sixth shutout of the season breaking the school record of five in one year set by the 1999 team.
Samford will return to action at home on Wednesday, Oct. 15, as it hosts Atlantic Sun rival Jacksonville State in a 7 p.m. match.
