Samford Aces Radford in Three Games

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Krista Kettering had five of Samford's season-high 12 service aces and Hilary Gary led the Bulldogs with 14 kills as Samford defeated Radford 3-0 in volleyball action at Seibert Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs won their third straight match to even their overall record at 9-9. The Bulldogs are now 5-0 at home this season. Radford dropped to 6-15.

Gary led the Samford offense recording 14 kills on 28 attacks for a .321 percentage. Kristin Berryman had eight kills while Angela Smith, Stefanie Pickett, and Brooke Berryman each had seven kills. Smith and Kettering led the Bulldogs with nine digs each.

Samford never trailed in the match winning 30-24, 30-25, and 30-19. After being tied at 10-10 in the opening game, the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to lead 16-12 and then a 9-5 run to take the score to 25-19. Whitehead then put the game away with a kill on game point.

In game two, Samford raced out to a 4-0 lead behind the serving of Pickett. Radford battled back behind the hitting of Divona Cox, who had team-high 11 kills, to pull to within 16-15. Samford then went on an 8-3 run to regain control of the game. Brooke Berryman's kill on game point closed out the game and gave Samford a 2-0 lead.

In the final game, Samford raced out to an 8-1 lead. Again, Radford responded with a 6-1 run to make the score 9-7, but that is as close as the Highlanders would come. Samford went on runs of 11-5 and 9-5 to reach match point at 29-17. Radford staged off three match points before Brooke Berryman ended the match with a kill.

Samford returns to action on Tuesday when it faces Atlantic Sun Conference rival Georgia State in a 7 p.m. match at Seibert Hall.
