Samford Holds Off Braves, 34-25

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Josh Kellett passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Samford University (3-3) to a 34-25 Homecoming win over Alcorn State University (5-2) in Division I-AA football Saturday.

Kellett threw scoring passes of 25 and 20 yards to receiver Aryvia Holmes and scored on a one-yard run as Samford jumped to a 29-13 halftime lead. Defensive end Darold Williams scored Samford's other first half touchdown on a 42-yard fumble return.

Alcorn State scored first on a four-yard fumble return by linebacker Dwan Wilson. After Samford moved to a 26-7 lead late in the half, Alcorn quarterback Donald Carrie hit receiver Kris Peters on a 41-yard scoring pass.

Samford's Chip Walters kicked a 32-yard field goal to give Samford its halftime margin. Alcorn State scored 10 points in the third period on David McConnell's 22-yard field goal and running back Sidney Dumas' 29-yard touchdown run, cutting Samford's lead to 29-23.

Walters made Samford's lead safe, kicking a 37-yard field goal with 2:59 remaining. Following the kickoff, Samford defensive end Blake Hall sacked Carrie in the end zone for a safety, giving the Bulldogs a 34-23 lead.

Alcorn State scored a safety with 1:08 left when Samford punter Ty Neil ran out of his own end zone rather than punt, making the score 34-25.

Kellett completed 18-of-32 passes for 214 yards, hitting Holmes seven times for 133 yards. Carrie completed 22-of-37 for 335 yards. Peters caught seven for 136 yards and George Jones seven for 126 yards for Alcorn State.
