ORLANDO, Fla. -
Marian Wagner scored two goals to tie the single-season record for goals in a season but it was not enough as Samford dropped its third-straight match 5-2 at UCF Monday afternoon.
Wagner scored her first goal of the game in the 80th minute as she headed in a long throw in by Adrianna Zertuche. She notched her school record tying ninth goal of the season in the 82nd minute, again on a header, this time off an Allison Provine corner kick. Wagner's nine goals tie teammates Lindsay Shanks and Hayley Kolb who also scored nine goals in their freshman seasons. Zertuche posted her first career assist and Provine's assist was her fourth of the year
Its senior class led UCF as five seniors scored goals on their Senior Day. The victory raised UCF's record to 13-4-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the Atlantic Sun while Samford dropped to 12-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the conference.
The five-goal outburst was the most goals allowed by a Samford opponent this season. UCF's offensive fireworks started at the 16:04 mark when senior Amanda King scored on a five-yard blast. King's fifth goal of the season was set up by a perfect pass from freshman Jennifer Montgomery to give UCF the 1-0 advantage. UCF quickly made it 2-0 right before halftime at the 43:19 mark when senior Nicole Cieslak scored on a header from five yards out. A perfect cross of the foot of freshman Courtney Baines set up Cieslak's ninth goal of the season.
The Golden Knights opened the second half right where they left off as senior Sara McDonald scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 52:22 mark.
Cieslak continued the scoring at the 55:24 mark as she scored her second goal of the match and her 10th this season on a five-yard shot in the center of the penalty area. Two great passes set up Cieslak's goal from Montgomery and Baines.
With her two points on the day, Montgomery now has 35 on the season, tied for seventh best in single-season history at UCF. Cieslak also moved into the record books at UCF, as she moved into a tie for ninth place in career goals with 27.
UCF made it 5-0 at the 61:59 mark when senior Ansley Gascoigne scored her fourth goal of the year off of another excellent cross. Gascoigne secured a pass from sophomore Pam Mattheus and lifted the ball into the back of the net.
The Golden Knights dominated play all afternoon as they totaled 22 shots while limiting Samford to just seven. UCF also had a decided edge on corner kicks, 8-4.
UCF returns to action Friday when they travel to Miami to face the Hurricanes. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Samford is back in action October 30, at Tennessee Tech in 3 p.m. match.
