Nelson Leads Bulldogs by Wolverines, 20-7

ATLANTA, Ga. - - Sophomore quarterback Ray Nelson came off the bench to account for 208 yards of total offense and Samford's defense forced five Morris Brown turnovers as the Bulldogs defeated the Wolverines, 20-7 in college football action Saturday afternoon at Herndon Stadium. The Bulldogs (4-3) played spoiler on Homecoming for the Wolverines (1-7).

Senior wide receiver Aryvia Holmes became Samford's all-time leading receiver in total yards. He caught five passes for 95 yards including four passes for 71 yards in the first half. He broke Brian James record with his third catch, a 41-yard gain. Holmes now has 2,488 career receiving yards.

Nelson relieved starter Josh Kellett in the second quarter and led Samford to 163 total yards in the first half, but the Bulldogs and Wolverines entered halftime scoreless.

D.J. Stancil scored the first touchdown of the game with 6:14 left in the third quarter. He ran nine yards up the middle for a touchdown. Chip Walters added the extra-point putting the Bulldogs ahead 7-0.

Samford drove 56 yards on nine plays at the start of the fourth quarter. Jason Ogletree took the option toss and ran 13 yards around left end for the touchdown extending the Bulldogs lead to 14-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Morris Brown's Xavier Butler returned the kick 73 yards to the Samford 10-yard line. One play later, Kalley Young scored on a 10-yard run cutting into Samford's lead. Michael Gaston added the extra-point to make it 14-7.

After Samford's defense forced a punt, Nelson led the offense on a 7-play, 55-yard drive. Fred Gilliam scored from 2-yards out. Walters added the extra-point for the 20-7 lead with 2:17 left in the game.

Gilliam led all rushers with 60 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. Nelson finished the game with 62 yards on 18 carries. He also completed 11-of-17 passes for 146 yards.

Samford next travels to Murray State at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday.
