COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -
Marian Wagner and Lindsay Shanks each scored second half goals but it was not enough for Samford to overcome a three goal deficit as the Bulldogs fell 3-2 at Tennessee Tech Wednesday afternoon.
Wagner scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Jen Bradbury in the 59th minute. The goal moved Wagner past Shanks and Hayley Kolb into first place on Samford's single-season scoring list. Wagner is now vying for the top spot on the single-season points list as she and Shanks have 23 points on the season tying Shanks' mark set last season.
After seeing her record broken, Shanks found the net in the 83rd minute to draw the Bulldogs to within one goal. It was Shanks' ninth goal of the season equaling her total from last season. She now has 18 career goals which moves her into second place on the career scoring list behind Mitzi Mahan, who scored 23 goals from 1997-2000.
Tennessee Tech (12-4-1) got on the board early when Jill Burns scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon. Robyn Vance hit the crossbar with a 25 yard shot in the 23 minute; the rebound went to the foot of Burns who placed a shot in the far side netting to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 led that they carried into halftime.
In the second half, Kylie Hammer headed in a corner kick by Burns in the 52nd minute to put Tech up 2-0. Three minutes later Burns scored her second goal off an assist by Alexis Boyd for the 3-0 lead.
Samford dropped to 12-6-1 on the season. The Bulldogs return home for Senior Night on Friday against Austin Peay. The 7 p.m. match is Samford's final match of the regular season.
