MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Hilary Gary and Alyssa Whitehead each had double figure kills to lead Samford to a 30-24, 30-25, 30-24 victory in volleyball action Friday night at Lockhart Gym.
Samford improved to 7-9 on the season by using a strong middle attack in the opening game. Gary had five of her match-high 16 kills in the first game while Stefanie Pickett record five of her nine kills in the opener.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-1 lead in game two before Alabama State's Andrea Denson lead a Lady Hornets comeback. Denson had a team-high 10 kills in the match as ASU tied the game at 23. Krista Kettering then served five-straight points with three of Samford's nine aces on the night to give the Bulldogs a 28-23 lead. Gary ended the game with a kill on game point to put Samford up two games to none.
Samford used a 13-3 run in game three to take control of the game after being tied at 6-6. Brooke Berryman had a team high 10 digs as the Bulldogs out dug the Lady Hornets 39-37. Samford out-hit ASU .256-.133. Alabama State dropped to 2-9 on the season.
It was Samford's first road victory of the season and ended and four match losing streak. The Bulldogs will try to make it two in a row on the road when they travel to Nashville to face Atlantic Sun Conference rival Belmont on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. That match will be broadcast live on www.samfordsports.com.
