Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Jacksonville soccer team did two things that no other team has been able to do this season Saturday night at the Samford Soccer Field. They scored more than one goal and defeated Samford at home in a 3-0 Atlantic Sun Conference match.
Vanessa Illanes got the Dolphins on the board in the 15th minute. Inge Heiremans played a ball down the flank that Illanes ran onto and blistered a shot from 30 yards that was just past the reach of Samford goalkeeper Crystal Royall.
Samford's Lisa Robishaw had a golden opportunity to level the match in the 25th minute but her shot from 10 yards missed over the cross bar.
The scored remained 1-0 until halftime. After the intermission, Jacksonville came out strong and netted a goal off a corner kick in the 47th minute. Ranveig Aas-Hanssen found a loose ball in the box off the corner from Illanes to make the score 2-0. Juli Petrauskas made the score 3-0 in the 68th minute as she received a pass from Michaelene Cadiz and placed a shot past Royall.
Samford had a number of opportunities of its own in the second half. Robishaw blasted a shot from 25 yards in the 55th minute that Stephanie Fowler made a fine save on. In the 80th minute Lindsay Shanks blistered a shot from 35 yards that Fowler pushed over the bar.
"I am not sure that was a 3-0 game," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "I am not upset about the way we played, you have to give Jacksonville credit they converted on their chances and their goalkeeper had a great game. Our kids played hard, we simply did not finish the chances we had and JU did."
Both teams will return to action on Monday night as Samford hosts Stetson in a 7 p.m. match at the Samford Soccer Field. Jacksonville travels to Jacksonville State.
