BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Samford senior Susan Polhemus scored her first goal of the season in the seventh minute and assisted on Marian Wagner's 11th goal of the year in the 55th minute as Samford defeated Austin Peay 2-0 on Senior night at the Samford Soccer Field on Friday night.
Polhemus' goal was her first tally since the 2000 season and the third goal of her career. Skye Dregalla sent in a cross which was headed by Wagner and then headed in by Polhemus. Both Wagner and Dregalla were credited with assists on the goal. It was the fastest goal of the season for Samford who improved to 13-6-1 on the season.
"This was a great way for Susan and all of our seniors to finish their careers," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "It is always great to win on Senior Night. It gives us confidence heading into the tournament next week. I am excited that a senior put us on the board first and got us going tonight."
The Bulldogs made it 2-0, 10 minutes after halftime as Polhemus sent a ball which Lindsay Shanks one-timed to Wagner who beat Austin Peay goalkeeper Stephanie Highsmith to the far post. Wagner now has 26 points on the season which sets a new school record. She and Shanks had tied the old record of 23 heading into Friday's action.
Samford controlled the run of play out shooting the Lady Govs 20-6. Samford took 11 corner kicks to just three for APSU. The Lady Govs dropped to 0-13-3 on the season.
The match concluded the regular season for both teams. Samford will travel to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament on Thursday, Nov. 7. The Bulldogs do not know their first round opponent but the match will begin at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on samfordsports.com.
