Volleyball Loses in Three to BSC

Nov. 6, 2002

Box Score

Sophomore Brooke Berryman set a career high with 19 kills, but Birmingham-Southern proved to be one step ahead all night as the Panthers downed the Bulldogs 3-0 in front of 406 fans at the Striplin Center.

SU fought back from a 14-6 deficit in the first game to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs could not sustain the momentum, though, and the Panthers claimed a hard-fought 37-35 win when BSC's Jenny Thomasson and Stephanie Harrington blocked an attack by sophomore Hilary Gary on game point.

The Bulldogs (13-13) never recovered and went on to drop the second and third games, 32-30 and 30-28.

Berryman set career highs in kills (19) and in attack percentage (.429). Junior Krista Kettering moved into second place on SU's all-time assist list. Kettering dolled out 50 assists, giving her a total of 2,969 on her career. First on the all-time list is Donna Mack, who totaled 4,147 assists from 1992-'95.

Junior Alyssa Whitehead and Gary collected 16 kills apiece.

Samford's final match of the season is Friday at Seibert Hall against future Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky (9-16, 5-10 OVC). The match begins at 7 p.m.
