Sophomore Brooke Berryman set a career high with 19 kills, but Birmingham-Southern proved to be one step ahead all night as the Panthers downed the Bulldogs 3-0 in front of 406 fans at the Striplin Center.
SU fought back from a 14-6 deficit in the first game to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs could not sustain the momentum, though, and the Panthers claimed a hard-fought 37-35 win when BSC's Jenny Thomasson and Stephanie Harrington blocked an attack by sophomore Hilary Gary on game point.
The Bulldogs (13-13) never recovered and went on to drop the second and third games, 32-30 and 30-28.
Berryman set career highs in kills (19) and in attack percentage (.429). Junior Krista Kettering moved into second place on SU's all-time assist list. Junior Alyssa Whitehead and Gary collected 16 kills apiece.
Samford's final match of the season is Friday at Seibert Hall against future Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky (9-16, 5-10 OVC). The match begins at 7 p.m.
