BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jacksonville capitalized on a 10-0 corner-kick advantage and beat Samford 3-1 in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Thursday. The Dolphins scored twice off corners and ended Samford soccer's winningest season to date.
Jacksonville put tremendous pressure on the Samford defense and out-shot the Bulldogs 8-5. The Dolphins got on the board in the first half in the 36th minute on a header by freshman Ranveig Aas-Hanssen. Atlantic Sun Player-of-the-Year Vanessa Illanes, who took all of the Dolphins corner kicks, assisted on the goal.
The Dolphins carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. Samford tied the game in the 52nd minute on a goal by freshman Allison Provine. Freshman Marian Wagner assisted on the goal, picking up her school-record 27th point.
"I thought we had a great opportunity to win it when we pulled tied 1-1," said coach Todd Yelton.
Freshman Regan Rone gave JU the lead for good on an unassisted goal from about 20 yards in the 66th minute. The score remained tied until the 90th minute, when sophomore Michaelene Cadiz provided the 3-1 final margin with a goal.
"(The season) was amazing," said Yelton. "I thought our kids played their hearts out. Before the game we talked about having no regrets, and they can be proud of the year they had."
Samford finishes the season with a 13-7-1 record.
