Lindsey Harris scored 14 points while
Chelsee Insell added 13 points as Samford held off Alabama State (1-6) Saturday evening in women's college basketball action in the Joe L. Reed Acadome. The Bulldogs (2-5) snapped Alabama State's home streak in the Acadome. The Lady Hornets were a perfect 13-0 in the Acadome last season.
The Bulldogs shot 44 percent in the second half while holding ASU to 32 percent. Samford made 8-of-10 free throws in the second half to make for the difference.
With Samford leading 45-44 with 30 seconds remaining, Brandy Davis missed a jumper inside the lane. Insell grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Insell made two free throws with three seconds remaining to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Samford quickly erased a 24-21 halftime at the start of the second half. Insell made a jumper and Harris added two free throws to put the Bulldogs ahead 25-24 with 18:54 left in the game. Noot Pittman's layup extended the Samford lead to 27-24 with 17:48 left.
ASU went on a 7-0 run to take a 31-27 lead with 11:02 remaining. Samford tied the game at, 32-32, on a layup by Harris and Insell's three-pointer with 9:11 on the clock. Trailing 35-34, Insell made two free throws to give Samford the lead for good with 7:48 remaining.
The Bulldogs built its largest lead of the half with 3:06 left. Harris' two free throws gave Samford a 45-39 lead.
Alabama State rallied from a 16-8 deficit to lead 24-21 at halftime. Trailing 6-4 with 16:42 left before halftime, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run. The Lady Hornets closed out the half with a 16-5 run to take the lead into the locker room.
Shameka Jackson led Alabama State with 12 points and 11 rebounds. LaTasha Thomas added 10 points for the Hornets. Andrea Ward and Friend each added six points for the Bulldogs.
Samford next travels to UNC-Asheville Thursday at 6 p.m.
