CHICAGO - Cedric Banks scored 22 points and Joe Scott had 15 points to lead the University of Illinois-Chicago to a 73-45 victory over Samford University Monday night at the UIC Pavilion.
Samford dropped to 4-4 on the season after having its worst shooting night of the season. The Bulldogs shot just 30 percent from the floor and only 23 percent from three point range. Eddie Harper, Bryan Boerjan, Phillip Ramelli, and Sebastian Sachse each scored eight points to lead the Bulldogs who for the second straight night found themselves in foul trouble from the beginning of the game.
The Bulldogs came out cold in the first half and never warmed up. Felton picked up three quick fouls in a ragged first nine minutes of the game and had to sit out most of the first half. The Bulldogs had an early lead but UIC went on run to take a 25-21 lead with 5:09 remaining. The Flames went on a 12-6 run to end the half and give the Flames a 37-27 halftime lead. Banks had 14 first half points for the Flames.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a pair of three pointers by Harper and Felton to pull to 41-33 but UIC went on a 6-0 run to force a timeout with 15:26 and pulled away as Samford went scoreless for 7:41 and UIC went on an 11-0 run to open up a 66-39 with 5:50 to play.
Both teams combined for 45 fouls in the game. In contrast to Samford's poor shooting, UIC shot 51 percent from the floor and 33 percent from long range. Neither team shot well from the free throw line as both teams were 56 percent from the stripe.
Samford's eight-game road trip continues on Saturday when the Bulldogs will be in Chattanooga to face the Mocs in a 6 p.m. CT game.
