Samford University fell 79-45 at Georgia State University on Saturday in an Atlantic Sun women's basketball game that saw 42 fouls called, 32 turnovers, and 59 free throws attempted.
Clarissa Clark led Samford (3-21, 2-15 A-Sun) with 13 points before fouling out with 6:22 remaining. Samford committed a season-high 23 fouls allowing Georgia State (16-9, 12-6 A-Sun) to go 23-33 from the free throw line. Georgia State was in the bonus at the 15:01 point of the second half and in the double-bonus by the 10:28 mark. By that time, Samford had three players with four personal fouls each. Georgia State did its share of hacking as well, but Samford shot just 54 percent (14-26) from the free throw line missing opportunity after opportunity to get back into the game.
Georgia State placed three players in double figures as it shot 51 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the foul line. Patechia Hartman scored 20 points on 6-11 shooting, Evita Rogers scored 19 points, and Angelina Miller had 18 points. The three combined went 19-30 from the floor and 15-21 from the charity stripe.
The tone of the game was set on Georgia State's very first possession. The Lady Panthers got two-offensive rebounds and were then fouled. GSU scored its first five points from the free throw line before scoring their first basket at the 16:34 mark. Samford on the other hand, scored just five points in the first eight minutes and trailed 16-5 at the second media timeout.
The Lady Panthers took a 42-22 lead into halftime. At the start of the second half, the game got really ugly. There were only three made field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, one by Samford and two by Georgia State. From the 16:19 mark until the 10:02 mark neither team made a shot from the floor. They were too busy shooting free throws. Samford went just 6-14 from the line while GSU went 7-8 from the line during that stretch.
Samford got as close as 15 points at 47-32 with 12:53 remaining, but missed free throws and then an injury to Jennifer East who had scored seven points prevented the Bulldogs from getting any closer. Georgia State went on a 21-6 run over the next eight minutes to put the game well out of reach.
Georgia State owned a 45-32 rebounding advantage and a 17-5 advantage in assists. The two teams will face each other again on Monday in Birmingham as they make up the game that was snowed out on Jan. 3. Tip off at Seibert Hall will be at 5 p.m.
