Macon, Ga.- The 2001-02 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball All-Conference honors were released today with freshman forward Jon Mills of Samford named the Atlantic Sun's top freshman. Mills averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds while starting 20 of 27 games for the Bulldogs.
Senior guard Chris Weaver also garnered post-season honors, as he was selected to the A-Sun All-Conference Second Team. Weaver averaged 14 points, four rebounds and two assists per game as a 28-game starter this season. He has started 57 consecutive games and reached 1,000 points for his career with 14 against Mercer on Senior Day at Seibert Hall. He currently has 1,005 career points and needs only seven to reach 400 for the season. Weaver was joined by UCF starters Ray Abellard and Paul Reed, Belmont's Wes Burtner, Aleem Muhammed of Mercer and Kevin Sheppard of Jacksonville.
Mills, a redshirt freshman, took over the starting role on Nov. 29 when sophomore forward Sebastian Sachse injured an ankle in the Bulldogs' first conference game against Mercer. Mills started 11 straight games before an ankle injury sidelined him for two games on Jan. 12. He returned to the starting lineup on Jan. 26 and has started every game since.
Mills posted a season and career high of 14 points in the season opener against Loyola Marymount and has scored in double digits a total of five times.
Mills was joined on the All-Freshman Team by Mercer's Jay January and Tyler McCurry, Dominique Klein of Campbell and Stetson's Mark Stiles.
