Samford University's softball team began the 2002 season at the Bama Bash hosted by The University of Alabama Friday night. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 4-1 to Evansville and the night-cap 11-2 to 13th ranked Alabama.
The Bulldogs were hurt by big innings on the tournaments first day. Evansville had a three-run inning in the third aided by a passed ball. Alabama had a three-run first and then had an eight-run fourth aided by three Samford miscues.
Offensively, Angela Bednark went 2-5 on the day with a home run against Evansville and scored a run against Alabama. Janet Middleton and Rebekah Phillips each had singles against Alabama and Dana Saffles and Michelle Dickey had singles in the opener. Deanna Resmonda had a RBI-sacrifice fly for her first RBI of the season.
Alabama (2-3) got on top in the first inning on a two-RBI triple by Lacy Prejean. She scored on an error to give Alabama a 3-0 lead. Samford answered with a pair of runs in the second inning. Bednark reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch in front of Resmondo's sacrifice fly which scored Middleton from third base.
In the fourth inning, Alabama sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits and took advantage of one error and a miss played fly ball.
Jennifer Wright got the win for Alabama pitching five innings giving up two runs on two hits. Amber Fuller took the loss for Samford.
Samford will face Maryland at 11 a.m. on Saturday and then a to be determined opponent at either 4 p.m. or 6 p.m.
