BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Robert Evans, Eric Hollis and Major Allred each had three hits and freshman right-hander Scott Fowler shut down the Blazers over 4.1 innings to pick up his second win of the season as Samford defeated cross-town rival UAB, 8-3 at Young Memorial Field on UAB's campus Tuesday evening.
The Bulldogs (15-12) battered the Blazers for 14 hits while UAB recorded only seven hits. Fowler, who relieved starter Frank Allen Yeilding after one inning, gave up one run on three hits.
UAB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Kyle Leon's RBI-single. The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the second when junior third baseman Kip Snowden hit a two-run home run to left field, scoring Sae Evans, who had walked to give Samford a 2-1 advantage.
Samford added three runs on four hits in the fourth. With two outs, back-to-back singles by Michael Collins and Cory Sumner gave Samford two base runners. Robert Evans singled to center field to score Collins and extend Samford's lead to 4-1. Hollis then hit a two-RBI double to left field putting Samford on top 5-1.
The Bulldogs made it 6-1 in the top of the sixth on Allred's RBI-single, plating Hollis. UAB cut into Samford's lead in the bottom of the inning when Eric Lyon scored on Justin Miller's double, making it 6-2.
Samford added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Mario White, who was pinch running for Allred, scored on a wild pitch and Jeff Stephens, who was pinch running for Sae Evans, scored on an error, putting the Bulldogs ahead 8-2. UAB added one run in the bottom of the ninth when Mark Garner scored on Chad House's ground out.
Allred finished a perfect 3-for-3 at plate with two walks and one RBI while Hollis and Robert Evans each were 3-for-5. Hollis also had two RBI. Sumner, Snowden, Joe Denson, Eli Iorg and Collins each had one hit.
Ryan Huffman (1-3) took the loss for the Blazers. Huffman gave up five runs on eight hits through 3.2 innings of work while striking out four.
Samford hits the road the rest of the week as the Bulldogs travel to Alabama A&M at 2 p.m. Wednesday before heading to Orlando, Fla. this weekend to face UCF in a key Atlantic Sun Conference series.
