Box Score
DELAND, Fla. -
Holly Burris hit a game winning home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one and Stetson hit three home runs in game two to sweep Wednesday's Atlantic Sun Conference softball double header against Samford 4-3 and 7-0 at the Sperling Sports Complex.
Samford (13-17, 0-2 A-Sun) battled back from a three run deficit in game one. After Stetson (35-5, 4-0 A-Sun) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs scratched across a run in the sixth. Michelle Dickey had a pinch hit double and then scored on a ground out by Amber Fuller to make the score 3-1. In the seventh, the Hatters committed three-straight errors to load the bases. Tammy Stevens had a RBI ground out and a wild pitch scored Dana Saffles with the tying run.
Burris broke Stetson's single-season home run record with her eighth blast of the season with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and she hit her ninth homer of the season with two-out in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Mariah Cobb hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Katie Harrigan also hit a two-run blast in the sixth inning to account for five of the Hatters seven runs in the nightcap. Those runs were enough for pitcher Melanie McElhaney who threw her seventh shutout of the season giving up just four hits and striking out 13 Bulldog batters.
Two of Samford's four hits in game two cam courtesy of Janet Middleton who saw her eight-game hitting streak snapped in the first game but she went 2-3 in game two to get back on track. Mindy Shunnarah and Angela Bednark also had singles in game two for Samford.
The Bulldogs will return home to face Troy State in the Bulldogs Atlantic Sun home opener on Tuesday, April 2, at 4 p.m.
