Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season as Host of Samford Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University's track and field team won a total of seven events, six of which were by the women's team, at the 2002 Samford Classic at Seibert Stadium.

The women's team highlighted Samford's participation in the Classic as both teams opened their outdoor track and field seasons.

Freshman LaToya Cunningham won her second event of the season, tying her career-best of 57.7 in the 400 meters. Cunningham also finished fourth in the 200 meters (25.58). Leah Reed also won her second 800 meters of the season, running a season-best of 2:19.45.

Katie Flewellyn posted a 4:45.67 in the 1,500 meters to claim her first 1,500 meters title and her third first-place finish overall this season. Samford's 4x400 meter relay team claimed first place with a time of 4:04.68, and Lauren Cole high-jumped 5'02" to win the women's high jump.

Rounding out the wins for the Bulldog women, Stephanie Flarity placed first in the triple jump with an effort of 11.38 meters. Angela Smith finished second behind Flarity with a jump of 10.95 meters.

For the men, senior and school record-holder Paul von Herrmann won the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.85. He also finished third in the 1,500 meters (4:00.29). Andrew Spear finished second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:42.05, and finished sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:20.91). Freshman Bryan Baddorf placed third in the 5,000 meters (15:03.13).

David Henson also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.85), while freshmen Derek Simmons and Daniel Balena led the Bulldogs in field events. Simmons placed third in the shot put (45'04") and the discus (142'04") and Daniel Balena tossed the javelin 160'09" for a third place finish.
