Wassermann Pitches Samford Past UAB, 6-2

BIRMINGHAM - Junior right-hander Ehren Wassermann struck out a career-high eight batters and held UAB to two runs over 7.2 innings as Samford defeated the Blazers, 6-2 at Joe Lee Griffin Field Tuesday night. Samford (18-14) completed the season sweep of UAB (8-20) after defeating the Blazers for the second time in seven days.

Wassermann, in only his third start of the season, gave up only six hits to pick up his third win of the season before giving way to Robert Evans in the eighth. Andre Parks, the first of five UAB pitchers, took the loss. Samford battered UAB pitchers for 15 hits, leaving 10 runners on base.

Samford scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. After Cory Sumner flied out to left field, Robert Evans extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a single through the right side. Grant Caldwell followed with a walk. Major Allred then singled in Evans to make it 1-0. Eric Hollis' single down the left field line scored Caldwell for a 2-0 Samford lead. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Kip Snowden singled to center scoring both Allred and Hollis for the 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs made it 5-0 in the bottom of the second. Michael Collins doubled of the center field wall and scored on Sumner's single up the middle. UAB cut into the lead in the fourth. Matt Gaulden's single scored Matt Womble, who led off with a double, leaving UAB behind 5-1.

UAB added another run in the top of the fifth when Mark Garner, who singled, scored on a wild pitch. But Samford answered back in the seventh with Joe Denson's RBI-single scoring Sae Evans, extending its lead to 6-2.

Sumner led Samford at the plate going 3-for-5 with one RBI. Snowden was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Robert Evans, Caldwell, Allred and Hollis each had two hits while Denson and Collins finished with one hit a piece. Sumner, Allred, Hollis and Denson each had one RBI.

Gaulden and Garner each went 2-for-4 for the Blazers.

Samford will host Alabama A&M Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
