The Samford Bulldogs have played 16 Atlantic Sun Conference games over the last month and the only thing that has been decided is that they must win the final two at Georgia State today. First pitch for this evening's twin bill is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET with game two beginning 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
Georgia State (29-24, 6-8 A-Sun) only needs one victory in its last four conference games to clinch at least a tie for the sixth and final tournament spot. A victory over Samford would clinch the tournament berth.
Samford (20-26, 5-11 A-Sun) must win both games today and hope that Georgia State does no better than a split at Mercer on Friday. In that scenario the two teams would tie for sixth place and the Bulldogs would advance because of the tiebreaker. If Georgia State losses its final four games the Bulldogs would advance with the six seed, however, if the Panthers win two of their final four they will advance.
Samford is 9-35 all-time against Georgia State. The Bulldogs did take two out of three last season after splitting the double header in Birmingham, Samford overcame a four-run deficit in the TAAC Tournament to defeat GSU 6-4. The last time the Bulldogs were in Atlanta, they dropped both games 1-0 and 4-0. Samford has played Georgia State more than any other opponent since 1987.
