Bulldogs End Skid Against Elon

ELON, N.C. - Sarah Godfrey went 2-3 in game one with a pair of RBI and followed up with another two RBI performance in game two as the Samford Bulldogs swept a double-header 4-3 and 5-1 at Elon University on Saturday.

Saturday's victories ended an eight-game losing streak and improved the Bulldogs to 15-21 on the year while giving Samford its first two road victories of the season.

Godfrey put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the second inning of game one with a RBI-single which scored Angela Bednark from third base. In the third inning, Samford added a pair of runs as Michelle Dickey's sacrifice fly scored Amber Fuller and Mindy Shunnarah drove home Janet Middleton with a single to centerfield.

Elon (9-25) pulled to 3-2 in the bottom of the third with back-to-back home runs by Jessica Swearengin and Danielle Concepcion. In the fifth, Godfrey singled home Bednark to put the Bulldogs up 4-2. Elon pulled closer in the sixth when they placed runners at second and third with two out. Concepcion singled home one run but Erin Landsburg got Suzanne Speed to ground back to her to end the inning. Landsburg improved to 8-13 with the win giving up eight hits and striking out two batters.

Samford jumped on Elon starter Shannon Courtney with three runs in the third inning of game two. Deanna Resmondo hit a sacrifice fly which scored Dana Saffles. Godfrey had a bases loaded double which scored Shunnarah and Dickey. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth when Rebekah Phillips tripled home Michelle Wright. Phillips scored on a fielder's choice by Resmondo staking the Bulldogs to a 5-0 lead.

Fuller threw seven innings giving up one run on eight hits and fanning eight to improve to 7-8 on the year. She also went 3-6 from the plate in the two games. Saffles and Dickey each had two hits in game two as the Bulldogs pounded out 19 hits in the two games.

Samford returns home on Tuesday as it begins an 8-game home stand. The Bulldogs face Atlantic Sun Conference rival Mercer in a double header at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
