Sal Deanda doubled to right center to score Johnny Keelan in the bottom of the 10th as Campbell defeated Samford, 9-8 at Taylor Field Friday night in game one of a key Atlantic Sun conference series. The Bulldogs fell to 24-26 overall and 10-15 in the conference while the Camels improved to 19-27 and 8-17 in the A-Sun.
Campbell battered Bulldog pitching for nine runs on 18 hits while Samford recorded 12 hits of its own. Andy Wade (1-1) picked up the win for Campbell in relief of starter Patrick Murray. Wade allowed two earned runs on five hits. Casey Graham took the loss in relief of Ehren Wassermann. Wassermann relieved starter Robert Evans in the third and gave up five runs on nine hits while striking out seven.
With one out in the tenth, Keelan doubled to left field putting the winning run on base for the Camels. Deanda then drove the first pitch he saw deep to right center. Robert Evans relayed the ball in, but Keelan slid safely into home beating the throw at the plate.
Samford trailed 8-5 after six innings, but tied the game with three runs in the top of the eighth. Grant Caldwell was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Heath Owen's single. Sae Evans reached on a fielder's choice. Eli Iorg singled to score Owen making it 8-6. Joe Denson grounded out to second to score Sae Evans. Iorg then scored on Michael Collins's RBI single tying the game.
The Bulldogs jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first when Cory Sumner scored on Caldwell's ground out giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs added two runs in the second. Iorg doubled and advanced to third on Denson's single. Collins tripled to score Iorg, but Denson was thrown out at home as Samford led 2-0. Mario White then doubled in Collins for the 3-0 advantage.
The Camels tied the game in the bottom of the second with three runs on four hits.
The Bulldogs regained the lead 5-3 in the top of the fourth. Eli Iorg doubled to right center field to move Sae Evans to third. Evans scored on an error and Iorg scored on Michael Collins ground out. However, the Camels took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Wineke hit a bases clearing double to give Campbell a 6-5 lead.
Iorg went 3-for-5 with one RBI to lead Samford while Sumner and Collins each finished 2-for-5. Collins also added three RBI. Keelan went 4-for-5 to lead Campbell at the plate.
Samford and Campbell complete their series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
