Marian Wagner headed in a free kick from Lindsay Shanks in the 97th minute to give Samford a 1-0 overtime victory over East Tennessee State on Monday night at the Samford Soccer Field.
Samford (7-0) continues its best start in the history of the program. The Bulldogs dominated the run of play out-shooting ETSU 19-4 in the match. Samford had seven corner kicks to just two for the Bucs who dropped to 2-3 on the season.
Samford had a number of opportunities to win the match in regulation but ETSU goal keeper Heather Sanden made seven saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Samford's best chance of the first half came off an Allison Provine cross which two Bulldogs got their heads to, but the shot ended up in the arms of Sanden.
The second half was all Bulldogs as ETSU took only one shot, which was not on goal. Samford took 12 shots in the period. The best chance came in the 78th minute as Skye Dregalla ran onto a ball an fired it off the near post the ball seemed to have crossed the goal line before an ETSU defender kicked the ball away, the referee ruled play on.
Wagner had two chances on headers in the second half before she converted in the extra period. "I knew Lindsay would hit a good ball, my first two headers went wide and I finally finished one," said Wagner of her first collegiate goal.
"I was pleased with the effort of our team tonight. We won 3-1 on Saturday but I thought we played better tonight than we did then. This is the first match we played well from start to finish," said head coach Todd Yelton.
The Bulldogs will return to conference play on Thursday as they host Campbell in a 7 p.m. match at the Samford Soccer Field.
