BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford Bulldogs and Birmingham-Southern Panthers are only separated by 10 miles, but their soccer teams meet tonight at the Samford Soccer Field for the first time since they played to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 19, 1999.
Tonight's game is important for both teams for more than just city bragging rights. The Bulldogs are trying to win the Jason's Deli/Samford Classic and begin the season 2-0 for the first time since that 1999 season. Birmingham-Southern is searching for its first victory of the 2002 season after falling to South Carolina and Western Kentucky in its first two matches.
Samford ushered in the 2002 season with a convincing 2-0 victory on Friday against Western Kentucky. Kelly Christoffer earned player of the match honors with a goal and an assist. Her last three goals have all been game-winners and her three points in the match were a career high. Goalkeeper Crystal Royall recorded the first shutout of her career making seven saves. Lisa Robishaw scored the seventh goal of her career to move her into ninth place all-time. The Bulldogs played 21 players in the match.
BSC is 0-2 on the season after falling 3-1 to Western Kentucky on Sunday. The Panthers dropped their opener at South Carolina 3-0 on Friday. Anna Daniels-Mulholland scored the Panthers first goal of the season in the 56th minute of their game on Sunday with an assist from Eyrun Oddsdotter.
The Bulldogs are 1-1-1 all time against Birmingham-Southern. BSC won the first meeting 2-1 in overtime on Sept 23, 1997. Samford took the next meeting 5-1 on Sept. 8, 1998. Kickoff for tonight's match is at 7 p.m.
