Lindsay Shanks Scores Twice in Samford Victory Over BSC

Sept. 3, 2002

Box Score

Samford's Lindsay Shanks scored two goals and Lisa Robishaw scored her second goal of the season to give Samford a 3-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern to claim the 2002 Jason's Deli/Samford Classic championship Tuesday night at the Samford Soccer Field.

Shanks took seven of the Bulldogs 14 shots and after coming close she finally found the back of the net in the 28th minute off an assist from Keala Ryan. Ryan sent a perfect ball through the midfield that split two BSC defenders and put Shanks one on one with Panther goal keeper Tally Ewing. Shanks made no mistake to notch her first goal of the year.

In the 56th minutes, Shanks scored a highlight reel goal off a cross from Audrea Youngman. Shanks volleyed the ball perfectly into the top corner of the goal giving Ewing no chance at a save.

"You'll never see me do that again it was a once in a lifetime shot," said Shanks. "We came out slow in the beginning, but after the first goal we began to step it up. I am happy with two, three would have been nice."

She just missed her chance at a hat trick minutes later. Once again she found herself one on one with Ewing, but Ewing came out of her goal aggressively and dove at Shanks' feet to steal the ball.

Samford's final goal came in the 78th minute when Robishaw found the near post netting from 10 yards with an assist from Jill Hudgens.

Samford goalkeeper Crystal Royall made four saves in helping the Bulldogs record their second straight shutout. Royall has injured in the 66th minute when she took a ball away from BSC's Eyrun Oddsdottir. Freshman Emily Morris played the next six minutes making one save. Royall returned to the match in the 72nd minute before giving way to Morris and later Sherry Nuckolls.

"Our freshmen goal keepers got minutes and that is good because you are always an injury away from one of them being the number one," said head coach Todd Yelton. "The biggest thing we need to learn from our first two matches is that we need to play from the beginning, however, after the initial 10 minutes I have been very pleased with the effort and our ability to put the ball in the net and keep it out of our own net."

Samford played every player on its active roster improving to 2-0 on the season while Birmingham-Southern fell to 0-3.

Shanks, Robishaw, Royall, and Kelly Christoffer were each named to the All-Tournament team along with Birmingham-Southern's Ewing. Western Kentucky who went 1-1 in the tournament placed Amy Uhlman and Kim Warren on the seven-player All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs will travel to Mobile, to play South Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m. in the first match of the Port City Nike Classic.
