Samford Starts Preparation for Nicholls State

Sept. 9, 2002

Samford went through a light workout Monday evening in Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs look to bounce back this weekend against Nicholls State after falling to Baylor last weekend.

"We were just trying to focus on corrections from the Baylor game," Samford head coach Bill Gray said. " We had a good film session. Monday's usually spent working on the corrections from the weekend. We introduced to them a little bit of what Nicholls will do in their defensive and offensive schemes."

Nicholls State (1-1) lost at Division I-A North Texas, 23-0 last Saturday. The Colonels will be the first team to throw a triple-option attack at the Bulldogs this season.

"This will be an important week for our defense. We'll see the option, which you don't see very much, They'll have to play assignment football in order to get ready for Nicholls' option," Gray said.

Samford will be without the services of sophomore running back John Williams and junior wide receiver Adrian Horstead. Williams broke his ankle against and will miss the remainder of the season. Hortsead is also out for the season after having surgery on his hand last week.

Junior defensive end Darold Williams re-entered the Bulldogs' lineup against Baylor. Freshman receiver Doc Rivers, who suffered a high-ankle sprain in two-a-days, will be ready to go against Nicholls.

The Bulldogs will practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Samford practice field beginning at 3:45 p.m.
