Soccer Falls At Middle Tennessee, 4-1

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Samford soccer team saw its three-match win streak come to an end as it dropped a 4-1 decision at Middle Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.

Hayley Kolb scored the lone Samford goal off an assist from Sara Geiger in the 60th minute. The goal was Kolb's second of the season and the 19th of her career as she moved into third place on Samford's career goal scoring list.

Samford (10-4-3) come out and controlled possession for the first 15 minutes of the match. Middle Tennessee (10-6-1) on its senior day began to take control midway through the opening half.

In the 29th minute, MTSU put the first tally on the board. Jenny Cox received a feed from Emily Carter 15 yards from goal. She hit struck a hard driven ball past a diving Crytsal Royall. In the 37th minute Rebecca Rodriguez who was a sub for Cox got open behind the Samford defense. She stuck a ball from 25 yards that hit the bottom of the crossbar and when in to give the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later Rodriguez headed in her second goal of the match and her 12th of the season off a cross by Lindsay Bopp. MTSU took the 3-0 lead in to the halftime break.

Hayley Kolb scored her 19th career goal on Sunday to move into third place all-time.


Samford was more dangerous in the second half. After only getting three shots in the first half, the Bulldogs had seven shots in the second half. Kolb's goal in the 60th minute gave Samford some life. With 15 minutes remaining the Bulldogs had a golden opportunity on a free kick just outside the penalty area. Kolb took the kick and found Marian Wagner in the box who flicked the ball into open space, but no Bulldog could get to the ball for the finish. With three minutes to go Lindsay Shanks crossed in a ball to Wagner who beat the keeper but MTSU defender Melissa Funke cleared the ball off the line.

MTSU put the exclamation point on the victory with a 90th minute unassisted goal by Laura Miguez. The four goals are the most allowed by Samford this season. The Blue Raiders out shot the Bulldogs 21-10 and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks in the match. Each goal keeper was forced to make five saves.

Samford will return to action on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. as it travels to cross-town rival Birmingham-Southern for its final road match of the regular season.
