Volleyball Falls 3-0 at Jax State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Alyssa Whitehead pounded out 10 kills and had a .318 attack percentage but it was not enough as Jacksonville State placed four players in double figures to defeat Samford 3-0 in Ohio Valley Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night.

Whitehead was the only Bulldog player in double figures, she also added seven digs. Hilary Gary had eight kills while Calloway Logan added nine digs for the Bulldogs who drop to 11-17 on the season and 5-10 in the OVC.

Jacksonville State (22-7, 11-4 OVC) was led by Jessica Stark who had 15 kills, Christina Cary, and Suzi Terrell who each had 14 kills. Shari Weyer added 11 kills for the Gamecocks who out-hit the Bulldogs .336- .168. Kisha West had 11 dig for JSU as it out-dug Samford 38-30.

JSU jumped out to an early 21-14 lead in game one before Samford went on a 10-4 run to make a game of it. The Bulldogs got as close as 28-26 but the Gamecocks were able to side out the last four points to win 30-28. Samford hit a match-high .233 in the opening game.

Game two was nip and tuck as both teams were even to 18-18. JSU went on a quick 5-0 run to lead 23-18 before going on to take the middle game 30-26.

Samford won the first point of game three but then allowed a free ball to drop in for a kill. JSU won the next four points to take a 5-1 lead. The lead would grow to 14-6 before the Bulldogs got their first kill from one of its hitters. The Gamecocks hit a match-high .414 in the final game while holding Samford to a match-low .074 to win 30-18 and take the match three games to none.

The loss eliminates Samford from any chance of making the OVC tournament.

Samford will return to action on Friday night as it hosts Tennessee State on Senior Night. It will be the Bulldogs final OVC match of the season.
