Women's Basketball Wins Exhibition Over Shorter, 68-44

Nov. 18, 2003

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Alex Munday led all scorers with 17 points, and tied for the Samford lead in rebounds with five, to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 68-44 victory over Shorter College in an exhibition game at Seibert Hall Tuesday night.

"I thought we had great effort," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "But we didn't have great effort and execution until the last 12 minutes of the game. We need to do a better job of guarding without fouling. I was pleased with our effort. They are a well-coached team playing in their seventh game of the season."

Samford opened the game with an 11-0 run, with the first six points coming on two three-pointers from sophomore guard Chelsee Insell. Shorter scored its first points when Vanita Riddle hit two free throws with 15:00 to go in the first half to cut the Samford lead to 11-2. Shorter got as close as four points, at 15-11, midway through the first half, but Samford took a 33-22 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Samford started the second half with an 8-2 run to increase its lead to 17, at 41-24 on a three-pointer by Morgan Vickery with 14:35 to go in the game. Shorter got no closer than 11 in the second half, and Samford pushed its lead out to as much as 26, at 68-42, on its way to the 68-44 victory.

Behind Munday for Samford, Insell scored nine points and Lindsey Harris and Sarah Clement scored eight apiece.

For Shorter, Ashley Green scored 12 points to lead the way. Riddle and Brandy Hutchins scored 11 each for Shorter.

Samford will open the 2003-04 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 22, against Alcorn State. Tip-off for the game is set for 2:00 p.m. at Seibert Hall
