Women's Basketball Wins At Nicholls State, 57-47

THIBODAUX, La. - The Samford women's basketball team defeated Nicholls State, 57-47, in Stopher Gym Tuesday night.

The first half was tight most of the way with neither team able to grab a substantial lead. With Nicholls State (1-4) leading, 15-13, late in the half, Samford (3-2) closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 23-15 lead into the locker room.

NSU opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a 24-23 lead on a pair of free throws by Marneshia Bryant with 16:53 to go in the game. Samford then took the lead back on a jumper by Cora Beth Smith on the next possession. Samford held the lead the rest of the way. The Colonels closed to within three points at 48-45 with 2:05 to go in the contest, but Samford closed the game with a 9-2 run to make the final score, 57-47.

Samford was led by Chelsee Insell with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Munday added 15 for the Bulldogs.

NSU was led by Ami Benya with 10 points.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 13, when the Bulldogs travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
