MOBILE, Ala. -- Samford's men's tennis team lost to South Alabama, the 43rd-ranked team in the country, 6-1 Friday. The Bulldogs will play Tennessee Tech in Mobile on Sunday.
The Jaguars dominated play, sweeping the doubles matches and winning the No. 1-No. 5 singles matches. Sophomore Joey Jensen recorded the Bulldogs' only win of the day, defeating Alex Piskunov 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
At No. 1 singles, Heinrich Heyl defeated Samford sophomore Clive Yeo 6-0, 6-0. Clinton Jacobs beat senior Travis Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Aurelio Di Zazzo won a highly competitive match against senior Raphael Bohli, 2-6, 7-6, (10-5) at No. 3 singles. Evan Fowler defeated freshman Johnny Griffee 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
In doubles, the Jaguars beat Yeo and freshman James Bryce at No. 1, Bohli/Johnson at No. 2 and Griffee/Leal at No. 3.
Coach Kemper Baker has indicated that the lineup is subject to change, especially in doubles. The Bulldogs will continue play with a match against Tennessee Tech Sunday in Mobile.
