Deanna Resmondo hit a two-out solo home run over the right-center field fence to give Erin Landsburg all the run support she would need as Samford defeated Auburn 1-0 in its season opener Tuesday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
Landsburg gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out a career-high nine batters in seven innings of work to move to 1-0 on the season. She pitched out of two runner on third and one out situations to secure the sixth shutout of her career.
Auburn (6-7) threatened in the first inning as Ashley Griffin led of the game with a walk and stole second. With one out she stole third, but Landsburg got Sara Dean and Martha Phillips to ground out to third to keep Griffin from scoring. In the fifth inning, Deni Zeigler doubled to left to open the frame. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Landsburg then struck out Griffin and got Shannon Anderson to ground to third to end the inning.
Resmondo's home run in the fifth inning was the second of her Samford career. The Bulldogs had three hits on the day. Sarah Godfrey led off the third inning with a double to left but was stranded at third and Michelle Wright singled to lead off the sixth.
Janet Spivey (2-1) took the loss for Auburn. She gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out six in six innings for work. Samford is 5-4 against Auburn since the 2000 season and have won the last three meetings in Birmingham.
Samford will travel to the Rebel/Easton Invitational hosted by Ole Miss this weekend. The Bulldogs first game of the tournament will be Saturday morning against Nicholls State.
