Auburn Drops Baseball, 10-1

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Chuck Jeroloman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI and the Tigers torched Samford pitching for 19 hits as Auburn defeated the Bulldogs, 10-1, at Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park. The Tigers (2-2) avenged last season's loss in Auburn and handed Samford (2-2) its first road loss of the season.

True freshman Justin Klinger provided Samford's lone run. Klinger hit a solo home run over the 385-ft wall in left center field in the top of the third inning. Auburn pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Arnold Hughey got the win. Hughey pitched four innings and allowed one earned run and recorded three strikeouts. Senior right-hander Ehren Wassermann (0-1) took the loss for Samford. Wassermann gave up five runs in nine hits in three innings. Scott Schade also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tigers.

Aftter a scoreless first inning, Auburn took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the bottom of the second. Tug Hulett doubled to left field and scored on Chuck Jeroloman's RBI single giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead. After Scott Schade singled to give the Tigers two base runners, Schade scored on Sean Gamble's ground ball. Javon Moran then doubled in Jeroloman for the 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs cut their deficit to 3-1 on Justin Klinger's first career hit, a home run over the left center field wall.

Auburn added two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jeroloman led off the inning with a home run to make it 4-1. Clete Thomas singled up the middle and advanced to third on Gamble's single. Moran grounded out, but Thomas scored.

The Tigers added three runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Thomas' two-RBI single capped off the Tigers' scoring to make for the final score.

Robert Evans, Michael Collins, Kip Snowden and Heath Owen each had one hit for Samford. The Bulldogs hit the road again when they travel to Nicholls State for a three-game set this weekend.
