Feb. 16, 2003

Box Score

THIBODAUX, La. -- Samford and Nicholls State wrapped up the weekend series Sunday at Ray E. Didier Field, with the Colonels winning by a score of 13-8. Nicholls State scored seven runs on 13 hits in the first three innings and cruised to a victory and a three game series sweep. Nicholls State (6-3) struck early and often, scoring two runs against senior Ehren Wassermann (0-2) in the first inning on five hits. The Colonels scored their first run on a double steal.

Nicholls added three more runs in the bottom of the second, with Brian James producing the big hit, a three-RBI, two-out double over Sae Evans in center field. In the third, Nicholls State added three runs on four hits. Jacob Carlson lined out to third base with the bases loaded to end the third inning.

The Colonels had 13 hits and loaded the bases in each of the first three innings. The Bulldogs, by contrast, could scratch out just two hits through three frames, a single to left center by Kip Snowden and an infield hit by Robert Evans.

Nicholls State added a single run in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead, and Wassermann's day was done. Wassermann pitched four innings, giving way to Chandler Tidwell in the fifth. Tidwell's luck wasn't much better, as the Colonels touched him for two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Casey Graham pitched a scoreless eighth for the Bulldogs, the only inning in which Nicholls State failed to score at least one run.

Sae Evans produced a couple of highlights for Samford. The first was a three-RBI homerun over the centerfield wall 401 feet from home plate in the top of the sixth that made the score 11-3. Evans also had a ninth-inning RBI single that made the score 13-7. The Bulldogs' other runs came on Joe Densen's RBI double down the left field line, and a Robert Evans two-RBI single in the eighth and sacrifice fly in the ninth.

The Colonels took the first two games of the series 3-2 and 14-4. Left hander Dustin Atkins (2-1) started for Nicholls State and worked six innings, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out three.

Samford had 8 runs on 13 hits and 1 error. Nicholls State tallied 13 runs on 24 hits, with 1 error.

Samford is in action next when it hosts Jacksonville in an Atlantic Sun series Feb. 21 and 22 at Joe Lee Griffen Field.
