UAB's Cody Cillo struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete game performance and Daniel Hill delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as the Blazers rallied to defeat Samford, 2-1, at Young Memorial Field Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell to 3-8 while UAB remained perfect at 10-0.
Cillo gave up three hits and Samford's lone run all in the first inning before holding the Bulldogs hitless the rest of the game. He allowed one run on three hits in nine innings. True freshman Stephen Artz recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings pitched to earn the no decision. Artz allowed one run on five hits. Frank Allen Yeilding (1-2) relieved Artz in the bottom of the eighth and suffered the loss. Yeilding allowed one run, one hit and walked one batter.
UAB trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth. Josh Miljavac walked to lead off the inning. After Mitch Jones bunted Miljavac to second, Steve Martin flied out to left field advancing the runner to third. Yeilding replaced Artz and walked Sam Clark, before giving up an RBI single to Kyle Leon, tying the game 1-1. Chandler Tidwell replaced Yeilding with runners on first and second. Hill singled through the left side scoring Clark for the go-ahead run.
Cillo struck out Matt Alling, Sae Evans and got Robert Evans to fly out to right field to secure his third win of the season.
The Bulldogs struck first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Sae Evans and Robert Evans each singled. Eric Hollis singled to left field scoring Sae Evans for Samford's lone run.
UAB stranded six base runners while the Bulldogs only left two runners on base.
Samford has this weekend off before a five-game home-stand next week. The Bulldogs host Auburn Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Alabama A&M Wednesday at 6 p.m. Samford hosts Campbell next weekend in its second A-Sun Series of the season.
