Softball Returns Home To Face Alabama State

The Samford softball team returns home on Wednesday to face Alabama State in a non-conference doubleheader at Bulldog Field beginning at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs have not played at home since Feb. 11, when they defeated Auburn 1-0. Samford is off to an 8-6 under first year head coach Beanie Ketcham.

The Bulldogs are coming off a second place finish at the Magic City Classic hosted by Birmingham-Southern last weekend. Junior Sarah Godfrey batted .476 last week. She went 5-7 in the Bulldogs sweep of Morris Brown and was 5-9 over the weekend. She batted in eight runs and scored six times. She leads Samford with an overall .425 batting average. Senior Michelle Wright hit her fourth home run of the season against UAB on Saturday to give her 12 of her career. Both Godfrey and Wright were named to the All-Tournament team at the Magic City Classic.

Samford is 4-0 this season in one-run games. Deanna Resmondo has three home runs this season, two of them have come in 1-0 victories over Auburn and UAB. The Bulldogs have also beaten Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech by one run.

The Bulldogs have hit 10 home runs in the first month of the season. The Bulldogs hit 17 all of last season. Wright has four home runs and 13 RBI this season to move up to second place in doubles and home runs and is third in RBI. Wright has 58 career RBI which is seven behind Janet Middleton's record of 65. Junior Angela Bednark is right behind Wright with 56 career RBI. Bednark is the career leader in home runs with 16.

Samford will host the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Samford will face Alabama A&M and future OVC rival Eastern Illinois in the two day event. Samford has won the last two invitationals. Last season, the Bulldogs swept past Alabama State and Wagner.
