Softball Sweeps JU in A-Sun Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Erin Landsburg gave up two earned runs in 14 innings of work on Sunday as Samford swept Jacksonville 4-3 in 10 innings and 8-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference softball action at Bulldog Field.

Samford moves to 16-7 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun. The Bulldogs are a perfect 9-0 at home this season. Jacksonville drops to 16-20 overall and 5-7 in the A-Sun.

Landsburg improved to 7-3 on the season throwing 136 pitches in 10 innings in the first game. She gave up three runs, one earned, walked three, and struck out nine. She started the second game and pitched four innings giving up two runs, one earned, walked two and fanned four while picking up a no decision. Emilee Lewis came on in relief the get the victory to improve to 6-2 pitching three shutout innings giving up two hits and fanning two batters.

Trisha Holman ended game one in the 10th inning as she was place at second base to start the inning. She stole third and scored on a throwing error by the JU catcher to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 victory. Samford improved to 6-1 in one-run game on the season.

Samford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Kelly Smith and Michelle Wright each had RBI singles. JU took advantage of Landsburg's only bad inning in the second. Landsburg walked the bases loaded in front of a RBI- infield single by Monica McGee. Dianna Korcak reached on an error which allowed the inning to continue and a run to score and Janie Palumbo's RBI single gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Landsburg that scored Deanna Resmondo who had doubled and moved to third on a ground out.

In game two, the Bulldogs used a three-run second inning and a four-run sixth inning to pull away from the Dolphins. Abi Casillo went 3-3 with two-RBI in the nightcap while Resmondo went 2-2 with a run batted in.

In the second, Wright led off with a walk and moved to second on a throwing error as Angela Bednark attempted to sacrifice. One-out later, Erin Hall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Casillo had a two-RBI single to center that scored Wright and Bednark. Resmondo singled home Hall with the third run.

Jacksonville answered with two runs in the top of the third inning. Korcak led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on an illegal pitch. Bridget Starry walked and advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a single by Sonja Cadarette to pull JU to within 3-2.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the third as Wright walked for the second time in the game and moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch. Samford blew the game open in the sixth as Casillo lined a double down the left field line. Resmondo followed with a single to move Casillo to third. Holman had an RBI single and the next two batters reached on fielder's choices to load the bases with two outs. Wright hit a fly ball to right field which was dropped by Jill Bandhauer and allowed all three runners on base to score.

Korcak went 3-4 in game two for the Dolphins with a run scored. McGee was 3-4 with an RBI and Palumbo was 2-5 with a RBI in the opener. Holman, Smith, and Hall each had two hits for the Bulldogs in game one.

Samford will play its next eight games on the road as it begins the road trip on Wednesday, March 26, in Orlando, Fla., where it will face UCF in a double header. The games will be broadcast on the internet at www.samfordsports.com
