BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Florida Atlantic came from behind to salvage the night cap, 7-5, and sweep the Samford softball
team in Bocca Raton on Friday night. The Owls won the first game 2-0.
Samford falls to 18-9 on the season and 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun. FAU improves to 20-19 overall
and 2-0 in conference play. Samford continues A-Sun play on Tuesday with a double header at
Troy State at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Angela Bednark tripled for the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth inning, but was left stranded as FAU pitcher Candice Freel fanned the next three Samford batters.
The Owls loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Jessica Braggins hit a two RBI single
to win the game for FAU.
Erin Landsburg took the loss for Samford. She scattered six hits, allowed two earned runs,
walked one and struck out one. Creel had a career high 12 K's for FAU. She allowed only two
Bulldog hits and two walks.
Samford pulled ahead first in the second game with a Michelle Wright RBI single. Bednark then
hit her fifth home run of the season to plate two more Samford runs in the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Erin Hall singled and Deanna Resmondo followed with a single to put runners on first and third. The two then successfully executed a double steal to score a run and make the score 4-0.
The Owls scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning.
In the fifth inning Resmondo led off with a double off the wall, and junior Sarah Godfrey followed with a double to plate Resmondo and make the score 5-2.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Samford walked two and had a fielder's choice to load the bases, and the Owls hit a sacrifice fly and a RBI single to pull to within one run at 5-4.
In the seventh inning Pam Mazarella hit a solo home run to tie the game. Jen Piazza singled over third base and Ebony Gray hit a two run home run to win the game.
Erin Landsburg took the loss for Samford. Her record now stands at 8-5. Freel was credited
with the second win also. Her record is now 10-6.
