Baseball Sweeps Alabama A&M, 6-4 and 9-0

NORMAL, Ala. - - Justin Klinger went 2-for-3 with two RBI in game one and senior right-hander Ehren Wassermann pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out a career-high nine batters as Samford swept a doubleheader from Alabama A&M Tuesday afternoon, 6-4 and 9-0. The Bulldogs ran their record to 7-22 on the season while A&M fell to 7-25.

Wassermann (2-5) picked up his first career shutout allowing four hits in 27 batters faced. Ronald Mickens, the first of six A&M pitchers took the loss. Eric Hollis led Samford going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Matt Alling, Sae Evans and Joe Denson each had two hits.

Alling led off game two with his first career home run. Alling drove the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to put Samford ahead 1-0. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the first. After Sae Evans singled and Ronald Mickens hit Justin Klinger, Eric Hollis singled to right center giving Samford the 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs made it 4-0 when Alling, who doubled to get on base, scored on Klinger's ground out in the top of the third.

Samford added one run in the top of fifth when Joe Denson scored on an error for the 5-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs used a four-run sixth inning to put Alabama A&M away. Hollis scored on Wassermann's triple to left center making it 6-0. Michael Collins singled in Wassermann and Denson singled in Collins giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead. Sae Evans RBI-single gave the Bulldogs the comfortable 9-0 lead.

In game one, the Bulldogs took advantage of seven Alabama errors to win 6-4.

Junior right-hander Karl Huch (2-0) picked up the win allowing two earned runs on nine hits in seven innings. A&M out-hit Samford 9-7 in the contest.

Samford jumped out 1-0 when Sae Evans, who walked, scored on Klinger's RBI single in the top of the first. Alabama A&M rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on two Samford errors. Dewayne Jones singled and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Alvin Hall reached base on error scoring Jones tying the game, 1-1. Demarcus Broughton grounded out scoring Hall putting A&M on top, 2-1.

Two errors by Alabama A&M allowed Samford to tie the game, 2-2, in the top of fourth. With two outs, David Henry singled and advanced to second on a balk. Wassermann and Jeff Dils both reached base on errors to plate Henry.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the fifth on Hollis' two-RBI single scoring Kip Snowden and Klinger giving Samford a 4-2 lead. Alabama A&M cut its deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth on Broughton's RBI single.

Samford added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Klinger singled in Richard Bishop, who reached base on an error, to make it, 5-3. Klinger scored on Snowden's single to left center putting Samford ahead, 6-3.

Alabama A&M drew within 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth Damian Ellison RBI double.

Broughton led A&M going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jones went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Alling, Sae Evans, Hollis, Henry and Snowden each had one hit.

Samford returns to action this weekend when it hosts Atlantic Sun foe Troy State. Friday's first-pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
