Women's Golf Moves Up At A-Suns

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Samford's women's golf team shot a second-round 328, and moved up one spot Tuesday at the Atlantic Sun Championships. The Bulldogs will conclude the tournament and their spring season Wednesday at the par-72, 5,942-yard Indigo Lakes Golf Course.

Kelly Villarreal continues to lead the Bulldogs, finishing the day tied for 24th. Tricia Harlow improved her score by a stroke on day two, shooting an 82, moving up five spots to finish in a tie for 29th. Sara Gossum made the biggest jump of the day for the Bulldogs, shooting an 80, nine shots better than Monday. Gossum moves up seven spots, to 47th.

Georgia State extended its lead to 12 shots over second place Florida Atlantic (616) after GSU's Sam White turned in the low score of the day with a 71 to take the lead with a 36-hole total of 146. Georgia State's Lisbeth Meincke was one of two players to score an even-par 72 to move into second place with a 142. First-round leader Anne Fraser (FAU) turned in a 77 on Tuesday to drop to third place with a score of 148. JSU's Florencia Moran is fourth and Campbell's Sharon O'Neill (153) rounds out the top five.

UCF dropped to fourth place with a team total of 623 while defending A-Sun Champion Campbell carded a 320 in the second round to fall to fifth place with a two-day total of 632. Stetson is sixth at 634, followed by Jacksonville's total of 640. Mercer and Samford are tied for eighth at 656, while Gardner-Webb rounds out the top 10 with a team score of 666. Belmont and Troy State are tied at 11th with a 36-hole total score of 675.

The final round of the 54-hole event begins at 8 a.m. on Wednesday to crown the 2003 A-Sun Champion. The winner receives the A-Sun's automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals in May and the Top 10 Regional winners advance to the NCAA Championships at the Birk Boilemaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, May 22-25.
