DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The good news for Samford men's golf Thursday at the second round of the Atlantic Sun Championships was that the team's score improved by four shots (312-308--620). The bad news was that nearly every other team's score improved more.
The Bulldogs are in 12th out of 12 teams after two of three rounds at the par-72, 6,670-yard Indigo Lakes Golf Club. Play concludes Friday. Samford started the day in 10th, and can regain that position by making up five shots total on Gardner-Webb and Stetson. The Bulldogs trail Mercer by 17.
A good sign for Samford was that each golfer broke 80 on his round Thursday, and in an unusual coincidence four of the five Bulldogs shot 77. Andy McRae continues to pace the Bulldogs, following up a 74 Wednesday with a 77. McRae is tied for 33rd. Louis South II and Bradley Farmer each made sharp second-round improvements. South bettered his score by five shots, while Farmer shaved seven strokes off his opening-round tally.
Georgia State increased its team lead to four strokes over Jacksonville State.
UCF's Stefan Wistorf shot the low round of the day with a 66, a day after shooting an opening round of 69, to take a four shot lead with a 135. Georgia State's Kasper Jorgenson is second with a 139 after scoring 70 on Thursday. JSU's Matias Anselmo and GSU's Ty Harris are both tied for third at 140 and JSU's Nick Mackay rounds out the top five wtiha two-day total of 141.
The winner of the tournament receives the A-Sun's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals, which will be played next month. The top 10 teams in each of the three regions advance to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma, May 27-30th.
