Sae Evans, Robert Evans and Eric Hollis each had two hits and Karl Huch picked up his third win of the season as Samford(11-26, 6-16 A-Sun) knocked off Jacksonville State, 6-3, Friday night at Ruddy Abbott Field. Ehren Wassermann picked up his second save of the season in relief.
Huch (3-0) allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work while striking out three. Wassermann allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work and struck out three. Jessie Corn (6-3) took the loss striking out eight in seven innings. Corn allowed three earned runs on seven hits. The Gamecocks (21-17, 13-9 A-Sun) committed four errors leading to three unearned runs. Sae Evans finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Hollis and Robert Evans each went 2-for-4. Hollis added two RBI. Clint Carroll went 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Jacksonville State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back singles by Evan Conley and Clint Carroll gave the Gamecocks runners with no outs. Richard Turner sacrificed the runners over. Conley scored on Shundell Russaw's ground out for the 1-0 lead. Kerri Fair's RBI single scored Carroll.
Samford tied the game in the top of the fourth. Robert Evans singled and moved to third on a single by Eric Hollis. A failed pickoff attempt allowed Robert Evans to score from third making it, 2-1. With two outs, Justin Klinger poked a single into right field scoring Hollis to tie the game.
Three errors by the Gamecocks in the top of the fifth led to two unearned runs for the Bulldogs. Joe Denson reached on an error and moved to second on Matt Alling's ground out. Sae Evans singled in Denson making it, 3-2. Sae Evans scored when Robert Evans reached on an error by Clint Carroll at second for a 4-2 Samford lead.
The teams wrap up the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Eric Hollis' two-out single in the top of seventh scored Sae Evans who singled and Robert Evans, who walked, for a 6-2 Samford lead.
The Gamecocks cut into their deficit 6-3 when Richard Turner who reached on a fielder's choice scored on a throwing error by Denson.
