April 22, 2003

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Erin Landsburg threw her fifth shut out of the season in game one but Beth Miller had a 2-RBI double in the fifth inning of game two off Landsburg as Samford and Georgia State split an Atlantic Sun double header at Bulldog Field on Tuesday.

Landsburg (13-9) was at the top of her game in the opener for Samford (25-16, 11-9 A-Sun). She tossed a five-hit shutout while striking out seven and did not walk a batter. She gave up only two hits during the first six innings.

Georgia State (21-29, 11-8 A-Sun) threatened in the seventh loading the bases with two outs but Landsburg got Miller to fly out to right fielder Michelle Wright, who made a diving catch in foul ground to end the game.

Samford got both of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wright led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base. Kelly Smith hit a sharp ground ball that went through the legs of the Panther second basemen that allowed Wright to score. Erin Hall hit an RBI-single through the left side to score Smith and give Landsburg all the run support she would need. The shutout was the Bulldogs ninth of the year which sets a new school record.

In game two, Georgia State put five straight hits together off Landsburg with two outs in the first inning. Lindsey Bryant had an RBI-double and Shannon McCormick had an RBI-single to put GSU up 2-0. Miller's RBI-double in the fifth scored McCormick and Jamie Cagle with two outs to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.

Samford answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hall had an RBI-single that scored Abi Casillo and Wright laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Trisha Holman to bring the Bulldogs to within 4-2. Samford threatened in the sixth but could not push any more runs across.

Lindsey French got the win for GSU throwing seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and fanning four to improve to 10-7. Andrea McNary (9-14) took the loss in game one.

Samford plays its final A-Sun double header against Mercer on Sunday. The Bulldogs have split their last five double headers and will likely have to sweep Mercer on Sunday to qualify for the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
