April 5, 2003

Box Score

Boiling Springs N.C.- Trisha Holman had the game-tying hit in the seventh inning and the game-winning RBI in the ninth as she led her current team, Samford, past her former team, Gardner-Webb 4-3 in nine innings in game one on Saturday.

The scheduled double header was delayed two and half hours due to storms in the Carolinas. Game two will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Samford (19-11, 5-4 A-Sun) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Sarah Godfrey's two-out single up the middle scored Michelle Wright and Kelly Smith. The lead was short lived. Gardner-Webb (11-26, 2-11 A-Sun) answered in the bottom of the inning. Carla Poskas singled off Holman's glove to drive in Lani Shaffer and Jess Wilke had a RBI ground out to score Rachael Riopel to tie the game.

GWU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Sherri Kolb doubled off the glove of Bridget Smith to score Christie Barlow. Stephanie Taylor retired the first two Samford hitters in the seventh before Abi Casillo reached on an error by third baseman Poskas. Erin Landsburg singled to move Casillo to second for Holman. Holman and Taylor, both from Foley, Ala., had always played on the same team until this season. Holman lined a single to left field that scored Casillo and send the game into extra innings.

Stacie Reichert took over for Taylor in the eighth inning and in the ninth, Godfrey and Angela Bednark had back-to-back singles with one out. One out later, Erin Landsburg walked to load the bases with two outs. Again, Holman walked to the plate. She saw four straight balls from Reichert to force home Godfrey with the winning run.

Landsburg threw all nine innings for the Bulldogs giving up 11 hits, three runs, and fanned eight batters to improve to 9-6 on the season. Reichert dropped to 4-13.

Bednark went 3-4 for Samford while Godfrey was 2-4 with two RBI. Shaffer, Riopel, and Barlow each had two hits for Gardner-Webb.

Game two of the double header was postponed to Sunday afternoon because of darkness.
